Postini Breakdown: Be Ready If It Happens Again PDF Print E-mail

mx record iconMany of those using Google's Postini were unable to receive email for up to 20 hours over the course of October 13 and 14.  If you didn't have a backup email system in place, here's an easy fix for users of Bluehost.com.  Bluehost support seemed to think this fix was a good idea but couldn't guarantee it would have helped in this situation because the emails were still being excepted by Postini though they couldn't pass them on.  But the fix is an easy one and short of canceling your account with Postini may help prevent a complete shutdown of your email if such an incident should reoccur.

  • Log into Cpanel
  • Go to MX Entry under the Email tab
  • Fill in your email domain name where it says "Change MX Record for____________"
  • Change the number to a higher number than your Postini priority numbers.  For instance if your postini priority numbers are 100, 200, 300, 400, then use a number greater than 400.  This sets your new MX Record entry as the lowest priority to be used only if the others fail.
  • Then put your email domain name in the last field after "to"
  • Click the "Change" button" and you should see the new entry

Support IconIf you're uncomfortable doing this yourself, you can start a ticket with bluehost.com and they'll make the change for you.  Just go to your Cpanel and near the buttom you'll see the "Submit a Support Request" icon pictured to the right.  To read more about the fallout from the incident check out this article.
